No, Scholastica is not a publisher. Scholastica is a technology solutions provider with easy-to-integrate software and services for every aspect of publishing academic journals — from peer review to production to hosting and discovery support. You can read more about our software and services here.
No, all journals that publish on Scholastica keep their copyright ownership and/or decide what copyright policy they will follow (e.g., CC BY 4.0.) Scholastica is not a publisher.
Scholastica's products are modular, meaning you can use our peer review system, production service, and OA publishing platform individually or together. Our solutions work best when seamlessly integrated to help you streamline your entire journal publishing process.
No, Scholastica does not produce any impact factors or rank citations. We are not a publisher or bibliometric service provider.
Scholastica does not offer copyediting services, but we do have copyediting partners we can recommend (to learn more, contact us). Our production team can work directly with copyediting partners to coordinate manuscript updates. And all copyediting communication can be done via Scholastica's built-in email feature, Discussions, centralizing and simplifying the entire production process to provide you with an end-to-end solution.
Scholastica's production process is fast and easy. Journals send us their original, unformatted DOCX or LaTex accepted manuscript files plus any attachments (figures, tables, etc.). We then produce proofs of each article in HTML + PDF within one week and share them with the corresponding author. Once we make any changes the author requests during proof review, we let the journal know so the editors can approve the final article. Articles are available in HTML, PDF, and full-text XML (JATS compliant) and produced from a single source, so files always stay in sync during proof review.
Scholastica's pricing is always available on our pricing page.
There are no setup costs! Certain products require up-front payment, but there are no separate setup fees.
The first step is to schedule an online demo with a Scholastica team member to click through the software/services you're interested in and answer any questions. From there, you'll create a journal account on Scholastica and enter payment information. Once you're ready to begin using Scholastica, you'll let us know, and we'll activate the account.
You can get a website up and running in an hour or less! Some steps might require our technical team to help — for example, migrating your journal's articles to Scholastica or setting up a custom domain (e.g., www.yourjournal.com).
Scholastica provides a customizable website template for open access journals. We don't build custom websites, and we only work with academic journals. You cannot bring over your old website style when you decide to use Scholastica's Open Access Publishing platform. You can upload back articles and issues to your Scholastica journal website.
Scholastica takes care of all the hosting for your journal(s)! Your journal's URL can be a custom domain (e.g., www.yourjournal.com) or a subdomain on your current site (e.g., www.myassociation.com/journal). We'll help you get your website URL set up and take care of all the rest.
Yes, you can publish as many journals as you want on Scholastica. Each account has its own settings and list of editors who have access. If desired, you can set up institutional users who have access to all the journals you publish on Scholastica.
Yes. Please see Scholastica's Terms of Service for more information on Scholastica's Data Process Addendum.
Yes, Scholastica can import journal back issues. We can import from a standard XML file or the standard export from other scholarly publishing systems (e.g., OJS, Digital Commons, etc.). We can also provide you with an article upload spreadsheet to fill out manually if you do not have XML. If you have a large volume of content not available in XML, contact us, and we can connect you with one of our developers to see how we can best import your articles and issues.
Scholastica uses industry-standard servers and databases that include distributed and encrypted backups of all your data, so your data has multiple secure redundancies to protect against any data loss.
Currently, Scholastica has integrations with select scholarly publishing discovery and archiving services (e.g., Google Scholar, DOAJ, Portico, etc.). If there is a service you want to integrate with that you don't see listed on our website, please contact us. We do not provide a public API at this time.
There are no extra costs to use Scholastica's available integration options. However, some services like Portico do have their own fees.
Scholastica provides journals with rich XML article-level metadata in the JATS standard for scholarly indexes. We also provide journal website templates structured to support Google Scholar indexing and offer integrations with DOAJ and PubMed Central.
Scholastica cannot apply for indexes or archives on your journal's behalf. But we do provide standard metadata to journals using our production service and/or Open Access journal publishing platform, which can be crawled by or submitted to any major scholarly indexing or archiving service.
